Sometimes you need a strategy in a stressful moment to re-center yourself. Here are a few ideas.
If you have less than a minute:
-
Take a deep breath in through your nose, hold it for 5 seconds and release it from your mouth for 6 seconds. Repeat.
-
Rub an orange scented (or a favorite scent) of lotion on your hands and breathe it in.
-
Close your eyes. Think of 3 things you are grateful for.
If you have a couple minutes:
-
Run warm water over your wrists in the sink. Allow yourself to relax for a few moments as you feel the water running over you. Close your eyes and tilt your head back as you feel the water.
-
Put on cozy socks or slippers and squish your toes into them or wrap yourself in a soft scarf.
-
Diffuse a favorite scent of essential oil into the air.
If you have ten or fifteen minutes:
-
Make yourself a cup of hot tea. Wrap up in a blanket, sit on a comfy chair and drink the tea.
-
Lie in a warm bath. Be intentional about letting your muscles relax into the water.
-
Grab a happy, entertaining or fun book and read it for a few minutes.
-
Write (without judgement or stopping) for a few minutes about anything that’s on your mind.
-
Listen to a guided meditation. Search online for “free guided meditations” to find one.
More ideas for calm:
-
Bring your kids to the park. While they play, listen to a favorite podcast.
-
Take a nap.
-
Pray for peace.
-
Daydream for a few minutes about a fun plan, event or activity that you have coming up.
-
Check in with yourself. Are you hungry? Thirsty? Feeling like you need some activity? Ask yourself, what need of yours can you meet to be in a better place?
